Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP said it turned off the Trans Mountain oil pipeline after discovering what it initially estimated to be about 12 barrels, or roughly two cubic metres, of spilled crude while conducting maintenance in a remote area near Kingsvale, B.C.

The Coldwater Indian Band has filed a second legal action concerning the Kinder Morgan pipeline running through its land, south of Merritt in the Interior.

The Wet'suwet'en First Nation says in its suit filed this week in B.C. Supreme Court that the railway's line bisects the Palling reserve, diverting the natural flow of a stream.

Climate change is more likely to result in other weather phenomena, such as more frequent and stronger hurricanes or cycles of severe drought and flooding. Weather patterns on the B.C. coast largely inoculate the region against violent cyclones because cool air coming off the Pacific Ocean prevents stagnant heat from accumulating . . . but the region is not immune to more severe weather brought on by climate change.
